5 Predictions for Staten Island Politics in 2010

Staten Island has seen strong displays of advocacy lately, specifically from the Tea Party of Staten Island and the movement to save Pouch Camp. The election of President Obama, Mayor Bloomberg's third term, and the gridlock in Albany have caused Staten Islanders to be more aware of the political scene. 2010 is shaping up to be an interesting year for Staten Island politics. Here are my predictions:

The Challenge to Rep. McMahon

Congressman Michael McMahon's CoS recently told the Staten Island Advance that he will be voting against the healthcare bill.

At first glance, this might seem like a good idea. Staten Island/Bay Ridge is a congressional district that leans conservative and many constituents are indeed against the bill. By voting against this bill, Rep. McMahon is definitely making it seem as if he is listening to his constituents' concerns, which I am sure he is.

How to Win Online in 2010

Great article over at TechPresident talking about how candidates can use to the Internet in 2010 to win. The reason this article stands out is because it discusses smaller races that never really considered using the Internet before - which is very relevant when it comes to Staten Island.

What is vPercent & Election Night Totals - Upset in the North Shore?

The polls have been closed for several hours and Debi Rose has declared victory in the North Shore City Council primary. According to the Associated Press, with all 125 precincts reporting, the tally is 4,656, or 55 percent, for Ms.Rose, 3,344, or 39 percent, for Mitchell, and roughly 6% for Rajiv Gowda. So what happened?

Election Night Totals - Updated

Since vPercent isn't that accurate when it comes to primaries when there are three candidates, I've attempted to tinker with it to see how close it can get to the real election night totals. As stated in the previous post, the numbers mentioned there didn't consider Rajiv Gowda. According to vPercent, Gowda is not in a position to take more than 12% of the vote - most likely, it will be around 10%.

Election Night Totals - North Shore City Council Primary

There is a Democratic primary election on September 15th on Staten Island for the North Shore City Council seat. Incumbent Councilman Ken Mitchell will be facing off Debi Rose for the votes of North Shore constituents. Once again, I ran the numbers through vPercent and here are the expected totals for election night.

Top 5 ways to GOTV on Staten Island

Primaries are right around the corner which means one thing- GOTV! Getting Out The Vote in primaries is like trying to get your 12 year old kid ready for the first day of school. It's especially hard in Staten Island because it only takes us 324 years (and lots of dough) to commute to our own city. So what are the best ways for campaigns on Staten Island to GOTV?

Spamming in the White House?

Controversy has arisen recently regarding an email blast sent from the White House. In an exchange between Robert Gibbs and reporter Major Garrett, it seems as if Gibbs didn't really know how to answer the question. Apparently, people who never subscribed to White House emails actually received emails from 1600 discussing health care. Now, it's appearing that what had happened was that outside groups took email lists and subscribed individuals to the White House email lists without their knowledge.

Is good enough..enough?

In a recent article by Wired (sorry, not online), they discuss how new technology has been succeeding by keeping things simpler, for example - Skype, Hulu, Kindle, etc. These products are not the top of the line and do not offers bells and whistles but somehow, they are leading the pack in their respective categories. The same applies to your online presence.

Setting up your online campaign - Basics Part 1

It's simply not enough in today's world for a campaign to throw together some HTML files or use starter templates as their main campaign website and then say the work is over. With the growing rate of technology and with the way constituents are now accessing, analyzing, and spreading information, it's imperative to connect your offline actions to your online actions. Here's where many go wrong.
